The story begins at Château Paul Mas in Conas hamlet, in the splendid town of Pézenas, the city of famous playwright Molière. The estates then expanded to Montagnac, with Nicole vineyard and Mas des Tannes. Jean-Claude Mas’s great-grandfather, Auguste Mas, bought the first family vineyard in 1892, when he aquired 9 ha (22 acres) of vines in the Mas de Bicq, near the village of St Pons de Mauschiens. In 1934, Raymond Mas brings the family vineyard to a surface of 15 ha in Domaine Montredon (Montagnac). In 1954, Paul Mas develops the vineyard to 120 ha (296 acres) with his brother, Maxime Mas. In 1987, Paul Mas gives 35 ha to his son, Jean-Claude, who creates 13 years later Domaines Paul Mas. Jean-Claude Mas is often described as one of those on a mission to give Languedoc his former glory back in a region where wine production goes back to more than 2000 years.
