With the first bottle of Rum produced in April 2019, Two Drifters Distillery is a distillery founded in Devon, UK by the husband wife team of Russ and Gemma Wakeham. The process of making rum at Two Drifters is unique for a UK rum distiller in that the entire process takes place in Devon, from the fermentation to double/triple distillations, to diluting with pure reverse osmosis water, through to spicing and bottling. The Two Drifters mission is to capture 1% of the global rum market by 2030. They aim to achieve this without harming the earth, by producing all their rums with a carbon negative footprint. Russ has a PhD in organic chemistry which led a fueled passion on carbon emissions and innovative sustainable practices. All Two Drifters Rums are Carbon Negative. To do this, all energy for the distillery is provided through renewable wind, tidal, solar and nuclear energy. This reduces their carbon footprint by a third compared to most distilleries. Russ and Gemma both drive electric vehicles, use only carbon neutral packaging and courier, have a low impact website, sustainable merchandise and more. In areas where CO2 is unavoidable, for instance shipping the molasses or glass bottle production, they work with a carbon removal company, Climeworks, that works like a carbon tax. As it is cheaper to avoid vs remove carbon, Two Drifters has presently avoided 120 tonnes and removed 35 tonnes of CO2. Recently, the distillery received their B Corp certification in January of 2022.
