About this winery

The story begins at Château Paul Mas in Conas hamlet, in the splendid town of Pézenas, the city of famous playwright Molière. Jean-Claude Mas’s great-grandfather, Auguste Mas, bought the first family vineyard in 1892, when he aquired 9 ha (22 acres) of vines in the Mas de Bicq, near the village of St Pons de Mauschiens. Production notes

Domaine Silène des Peyrals owns its name to the discovery among the “peyrals” (solid white compressed limestone) of an ancient clay seal with the face of Silenus, companion of Bacchus, who is said to have controlled the divine nature of the vineyards. The estate was acquired in 2014 by Jean Claude Mas and Giorgio Grai, his Italian mentor, with the aim to create the greatest wine of the Languedoc: the soil, the exposure, the vineyards have all the resources to make it happen. The 25 hectares are managed organically with biodynamic principles and located at an altitude of 110m between the Mediterranean Sea and the Herault valley. The Silènes vineyard exposure on a sunny windy plateau offers especially good conditions to prevent from diseases and maturation problems. Preference is given to picking by hand with strict sorting of the grapes. After a partial destemming of the harvest, each varietal is vinified separately. Fermentation at 28°C with selected yeasts. Post fermentation maceration during 20 days with regular pumping over. Ageing: We blend the wine before ageing for 18 months in French oak barrels, then bottling. Soil: stony, compressed limestone and clay Age: 25 to 30-year-old vines Pruning: Cordon de Royat Density of plantation: 4400 plants/ha Average Yield: 35 hl/ha Harvest: manual Elevation: 110 m Climate: Mediterranean
