The history of Marchesi Mazzei is the story of Tuscany, uniting the family and famous region since the 11th century. The winery’s roots in the territory span over 600 years and continue to expand through new wineries and vineyards, including Castello di Fonterutoli in the heart of Chianti Classico, Belgvardo in Maremma (Tuscany), Zisola in Noto (Sicily) and Prosecco house Villa Marcello in Treviso (Veneto). Ser Lapo Mazzei is the author of the first known document to use the "Chianti" denomination in 1398. In 1435, his granddaughter Madonna Smeralda Mazzei married Piero di Agnolo da Fonterutoli, the holding became part of the family's estate. Later in the 18th century, Philip Mazzei, made an enduring impact in both Italy and later in the United States, where he planted vineyards for Thomas Jefferson. He is a man of historic reference, having coined the term “All Men Are Created Equal” which became the cornerstone for the U.S.A. Declaration of Independence. Mazzei now produces a wine called “Philip” in his honour which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and a tribute to his time spent in the U.S., embodying the style of the new world while remaining true to the spirit of Tuscany. In 1995, with the aim of enriching the appellation, the Mazzei family decided to create authentic Chianti Classico "chateau" bottlings, with 3 different Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The family selected grapes from their finest lots within the Chianti Classico villages of Castellina, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda, to honour the specific characters of these unique vineyard areas within the Chianti Classico region. At Fonterutoli, and at all estates, the family remains committed to promoting indigenous varieties as an expression of the identity of the region and protecting the diversity and nature, through sustainable agriculture and improvements.
